Participatory Launch of the
WOMEN’S MOSAIC WALL
in commemoration of
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, 2018
Sunday March 4, 7.30am – 8.30am @ Blue Sky, Persiaran Karpal Singh
‘‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.’ Margaret Mead
The colourful, rather majestic Women’s Mosaic Wall stands out across the Blue Sky monument (the 4 blue pillars) at Persiaran Karpal Singh since its completion in November 2017. We are delighted to be collaborating with JCI Pearl, Penang in their 'Run with Flying Colours', on March 4 at Persiaran Karpal Singh to inaugurate the Women’s Mosaic Wall with an on-site life performance on 'Extraordinary Lives of Ordinary Women’ from 7.30am to 8.45am to commemorate 2018 International Women's Day. The performance is designed to foster a greater awareness and deeper appreciation of women's invisible contributions to their families and communities. International Women’s Day* is also a time to reflect on the daily acts of courage, stoic determination and quiet resilience of ordinary women who have lived extraordinarily for their families, communities and countries, and worldwide.
The inauguration was initially planned to co-launch a publication of stories of our mothers and/or other significant women like our grandmas, aunts, mothers-in-law etc. to profile the extraordinary lives of ordinary women. However this will not be ready by March 4 but do stay tune in. It will be published before end of the year.
Led by Soon, (a young passionate performance-maker teacher who uses performing arts to discover students talents in high-need schools), we have created a performance of ‘extraordinary lives of ordinary women’. These showcases are based on real lived experiences narrated and developed by 15 participants in a workshop on ‘women’s lives that shaped us’. 5 stories of 5 different women will be performed in 5 stations along the promenade, stretching from opposite McDonald’s to the Blue Sky Monument at Persiaran Karpal Singh. These stories are performed by ordinary citizens - just like you and me. For most of us, this is our first public performance. Performers are not enacting their personal life stories but the showcases are lived experiences shared by workshop participants, story-writers and people out there around us. Led by Kas, (another young passionate teacher and poet, who believes her vocation is to bring communities together through art and education), performers (and audience) will dance/move along with the ‘One Billion Rising-Break the Chain’ flash mob dance, to raise awareness of violence against women, to RISE against all forms of exploitation and violence against women, all genders, especially girls and those marginalised and vulnerable, to RISE for their and our rights, safety and freedom.
The launch event will commence with a silent performance whereby performers located at different corners will respond to each other to express ‘Resilience, Together We Stand’, by creating a composition of the Zen Rock Garden. This is followed by 5 showcases, portraying how ordinary women have lived extraordinary lives. Young girls from Penang International School (Uplands) will grace us with a dance routine on the ‘good and evil’. We then
invite the audience to join us in the ‘One Billion Rising-Break the Chain’ flash mob, before we invite everyone present: women, men and all genders, children – old and not so old and the young and not so young, to come forward to symbolically break the chain around the mosaic wall and collectively launch this new landmark of Penang as Penang lang’s gift to locals and visitors. The launch event will end with a young girls’ flash mob by Penang International School (Uplands) to signify our hope and continuity.
For your information, the mosaic pieces on the Women’s Mosaic Wall were crafted by over 200 Penangites to commemorate International Women's Day in 2015 to engage women, children and men to honour women’s lives, and to understand the meaning and significance of International Women’s Day. The mosaic crafting workshop activity was initially designed to create awareness and to commemorate International Women’s Day in 2015, but has now evolved into a significant landmark in Penang. Indeed, perhaps the first permanent public display of ordinary people’s art in Penang We had explored numerous possibilities for over a year in the Georgetown heritage zone but could not source a suitable site or taker because of the stringent municipal requirements until IJM Land came forward. Our grateful appreciation to IJM Land for lending its support. They submitted the necessary application and addressed all the requirements by MBPP, specially built a wall and sponsored all the cost for the installation. We are particularly encouraged by IJM Land’s generous support to an initiative of ordinary citizens for ordinary citizens. We hope IJM Land will continue to support the agency and contributions of ordinary citizens. The Women’s Mosaic Wall will surely in time attract more locals and visitors to Persiaran Karpal Singh as it had already drawn curious attention even during the installation. Indeed the Women’s Mosaic Wall marks not only another of IJM Land's effort to bring art out of gallery spaces into the public realm, but through this sponsorship IJM Land has even moved a step ahead to promote ordinary citizens' art and creation, not just art by the professional or paid artists. We specially thank IJM Land for having confidence in us and our congratulations to IJM Land for daring to take the lead in this direction. We would like to iterate again that the Women’s Mosaic Wall’s launch, like the mosaic-crafting workshop in 2015 is initiated and organised by ordinary citizens. We convinced people to support us in whatever way they can. We started with just our hearts, heads, hands, time and a conviction that we can make it happen, as the call to ‘make it happen’ in the theme of 2015 International Women’s Day. We certainly would not be able to do what we are planning for March 4, if not for the conviction and support from those who believe in us and their own capacities as ordinary citizens. Come and join us to celebrate the lives of the women who have shaped us, to honour them and to celebrate their strength, courage, resilience, determination and enabling power. Bring your family and friends.
*International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1909 and continue to be commemorated annually around the world on 8 March to mark the economic, political and social struggles and achievements of women, and to renew the call for gender equity and gender justice, not just gender equality. IWD is also a time to reflect on the daily acts of sacrifice, endurance, hope, courage, determination and quiet resilience of ordinary women who have played extraordinary roles in their families, communities, countries, and worldwide.
